As adults, most of us know someone who has had some sort of cardiovascular event...

National cholesterol awareness month is coming up in October...

In the intricate symphony of health, cholesterol holds a key role, often working quietly in the background until its impact builds to serious issues like heart disease or stroke. However, in the fast-paced rhythm of modern life, many tend to overlook the importance of managing cholesterol levels. This October, we turn our focus to this vital element of cardiovascular health.

Understanding cholesterol

Before we dive in further, let’s clarify what cholesterol is. It’s a waxy-like substance in the blood that’s vital for cell formation and hormone production. It's essential for life and our bodies produce 80% percent of it. However, having too much LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, commonly referred to as ‘bad’ cholesterol, can build up in the arteries, causing blockages and raising the risk of heart disease. In contrast, HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol is considered ‘good’ cholesterol because it helps clear LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream.

Recommendations for better heart health

Get screened – Knowledge is power. Schedule a cholesterol screening to assess your risk factors and take proactive steps for better heart health.

Seek support – Educating yourself on proper nutrition and exercise is essential for maintaining a healthy heart.

Embrace a heart-healthy lifestyle – Nourish your body with nutritious foods, make physical activity a priority, and if you smoke, quit!
